Rubicon Grain & Potato Free Dog Food

Great Life “Rubicon” Grain & Potato Free Formula Dog Food

While Dr Jeannie and The Whole Dog believe that dogs are carnivores and as such should be fed a raw meaty bone diet, we understand that there are still dog owners and care givers out there that are not quite ready for the switch or that need something to feed in an emergency or while slowly transitioning their dog to a raw diet. Great LIfe’s grain and potato free dog foods are made with freeze dried raw meats and naturally sourced vitamins, etc. that are applied so your dog is able to attain some LIVE nutrients as opposed to all other kibble on the market that has only a synthetic substance that sprayed on just before packaging.

Please read why Kibble and canned pet food is totally void of any true, live or natural nutrition HERE

For the past fifty years, commercial pet food companies have attempted to assure us that their pet foods are nutritionally complete and balanced”. or “scientifically balanced.” They tell us these statements are based on study after study; however, what they don’t tell you that these “studies” are based on human/omnivore nutrition. They are not based on carnivore nutrition or studies). Most of the pet foods on the market are grain based- whole wheat, barley, oats, corn meal or rice with added synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Thankfully, more consumers are becoming educated and know that grains and potatoes are not food for carnivores so, the commercial pet food industry, in an attempt to keep up their multi-billion dollar sales figures, came up the latest trend in pet foods: the addition of potatoes and elimination of some or all of the grains. The problem here is that they don’t tell you that Potatoes contain a carcinogen- *acrylamide- As a daily maintenance food, potatoes are not a health food! They may actually be a part of the cancer epidemic in pets!

The August 14, 2002 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, reported presence of high levels of acrylamide in carbohydrate rich foods like potatoes.

*Acrylamide induces gene mutations and has been found in animal tests to cause malignant stomach tumors. It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.

I called my vet to ask her a simple question. What food does she suggest I feed my dogs, since I now feed Rubicon Grain and Potato Free and want to know if she agrees with the choice or would she recommend a better dog food? My vet left me a voicemail that she had some reservations about the Rubicon. She wondered aloud if you all had done any large-scale published nutritional studies like Purina, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Iams and (another brand name I cannot recall) have completed. When I listened to her voicemail, I was pretty shocked at her dog food suggestions. Her statement about the studies made me recall the tobacco companies’ published health studies which concluded smoking wasn’t dangerous. Considering both my dogs got hot spots when I fed them Eukanuba and Iams, I went to talk to my vet in person. I confronted my vet with a list of ingredients from the 5 different “big name” brands she mentioned. She was floored to see the amount of crap in the dog foods she suggested. As you may know, ingredients are listed in order of highest percentage ingredient by weight. When I showed her the “premium” ingredients from the brands she suggested versus the ingredients contained in Great Life, she was speechless. I told her that as a trained chemist I’d rather feed my dogs a dog food that contained cranberries and blueberries instead of Purina’s “added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2)” Half-Jokingly, I told her that my wife and I were thinking of eating Great Life given the quality of ingredients. As any medical professional, she didn’t want to admit that there might be something to better nutrition, but I definitely made her rethink her responses to me and she backpedaled on her earlier position and suggested that if Great Life isn’t causing problems then I may want to continue to feed it to them. The more entertaining part was that once she was out of earshot one of her vet techs who overheard us asked me for the brand name and store where I got the food, so he could give it to his dogs. My dogs love your food, at 5+ years old they exude energy, their coats are wonderful, and I feel good that the ingredients are so healthful. Thanks, Peter Nagy We have 2 pugs and one is 16 years old. She had pug encephalitis when she was a baby and they said she wouldn?t live passed a year but we have taken such good care of her with vitamins etc and she has lived far beyond the life expectancy of the average pug. In the past 2 years she has eatten very little no matter what we feed her and she is just all ribs and bones. We recently got your food and she dives into it! She has gained 3 lbs in one month and her ribs don?t stick out anymore. This food is incredible! Joan Charlie is fine. He is doing well on the Rubicon, we are feeding him the Lamb and using the Buffalo for a treat on occasion. He has the nicest poop! His coat looks good and the hint of pink under his white fur has decreased. I think that it is really agreeing with him. He is full of energy and loving life. Lori

The dogs seem to be doing great on Rubicon Grain Free Food. I am using that in the morning and then at night they get Embark with Chicken mixed in. They seem like very happy healthy pups right now 🙂 And they have good poops, too.
