Yeast Infections In Dogs

Yeast Infections In Dogs
by Dr Jeanette (Jeannie) Thomason

Yeasts are single cell organisms, which are found on the surfaces of all living things, including your dog’s body. Yeasts normally live on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. One family of yeasts called, Candida albicans, live in the digestive tract and consume substances such as sugar and fats in order to survive. When our dog’s immune system is healthy, the body is able to destroy the yeasts and keep them under control. However, when the immune system is weak, the yeast, being an opportunistic feeder, may produce in mass amounts causing toxins that disable the immune system and prevent it from functioning properly. At this point, the system becomes altered causing a host of health problems. So, It goes without saying that an overgrowth of yeast toxins will affect your pet’s immune system, nervous system, and their endocrine system. Since these systems are all inter-connected, yeast toxins play a major role in causing allergies, bladder infections, skin disorders and many other health problems. Yeast infections in dogs are usually found in the skin and ears and are caused by an organism called Malasezzia pachydermatis or malasezzia for short. Malasezzia, interestingly enough, appeared on the dermatology scene about 10 years ago, but may have been around a lot longer. It used to be, and still is in many dogs, one that is ever present but doesn’t do any harm. In the dog?s ears, it is considered a secondary pathogen, but in the skin it is now recognized as a primary one, although there is usually a predisposing cause that changes it from an innocent bystander into an itchy, relentless problem. Many times, dogs that are suffering from malasezzia will have skin lesions or sores. These lesions can be only one or two or, localized in patches, or in some cases all over the body. These sores are usually red and are accompanied by areas of increased pigmentation, hair loss, and scaliness or greasiness. This scaliness and greasiness with a yellowish tint is usually indicative that malasezzia is the culprit. The dogs are also usually very itchy and have a musty type odor. The most common sites for these sores are the underside of the neck, the belly, and the feet, especially between the toes. Candida albicans is another yeast-like fungus that normally lives in a healthy balance in the body. When the balance is upset, infection results. This is known as Candidiasis and the fungus travels to all parts of the body through the bloodstream. As mentioned above, Normally, the large intestine hosts a balance of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bifidus) along with yeast. The harmful Candida is usually kept in check by the Lactobacillus bacteria, partially by the production of lactic acid. Candida actually provides growth factors for Lactobacillus. They exist in a natural balance, until something happens to upset that balance. Although there is no “single factor” responsible for turning this naturally occurring organism into an agent of disease, the candidal species is notorious for being an “opportunistic” pathogen: “They incite disease in hosts whose local or systemic immune attributes have been impaired, damaged, or innately dysfunctional”. Candida has a tenacious ability to adhere to mucosal surfaces. This is a necessary step for the initiation of candidiasis, and adherence depends on the immune status of the host. Candida secretes enzymes which destroy membrane integrity, leading to dysfunction. Candida also secretes toxins which activate the immune system, overload the liver, and deposit in body tissues. The main cause of yeast infections, such as Candida Albicans, is from grain-based foods and drugs, chemicals and poisons. Cooked foods anything in a can or a bag, vaccines which compromise and destroy the natural immune system, antibiotics which kill the friendly bacteria which would ordinarily fight and overwhelm the yeast, steroids that shut down the body’s ability to fight back, and any and all other drugs, chemicals and poisons, including frontline, advantage, program, heartguard, etc, that compromise the immune system are all additional reasons for seeing such a preponderance of yeast infections. Yeast infections seem to be one the most under-diagnosed illnesses in the veterinary field. Many different types of traditional treatments are being used to treat yeast and other skin problems. Although drugs are temporally effective for the symptoms, they do not eliminate the cause of the symptom. I believe you need to get at the cause, you need to look at the whole picture, the whole dog if you will. Once the cause is found, a PREVENTION PLAN can be initiated.

Prevention is the cure!

Immediately you need to get your dog on raw meat and bone diet with supplements to balance and boost the immune system, cleanse these toxins from the body, re-establish the good/friendly bacteria to help the body to crowd-out and combat the yeast and enhance the level of nutrition. As prevention, these must be permanent lifestyle changes for your dog in order for him/her to be able to resist any future yeast infections.

While a fresh, raw meat and bones diet is the preferable diet, if you are not willing to go to an all raw diet for your dog then please consider a grain and potato free dehydrated raw diet or at the very least, switch to a home cooked diet with out grains or vegetables.

This may be a HUGE step for you to totally do away with processed, commercial pet food for your dog. However, this is the best and quickest way to heal your dog of yeast and prevent it from ever coming back again.

br> Yes, you can take baby steps and switch to a grain and potato free kibble for starters however you would not be reading this if your dog was not suffering with yeast that seems to be resistant to all other means of elilminating it. Switching your dog to a grain and potato free kibble is a good start if you have not already done so however,

*Just be warned that it will take longer to get the yeast under control with a processed food diet then just feeding your dog the diet he was designed to eat in the first place.

Let’s just think about this for a minute, you see, science proves dogs are carnivores and were not designed to eat grains in the first place. They do not manufacter amylase in their saliva, to start the break-down of carbohydrates and starches; amylase in the saliva is something omnivorous and herbivorous animals possess, but not carnivorous animals. This places the burden entirely on the pancreas, forcing it to produce large amounts of amylase to deal with the starch, cellulose, and carbohydrates in grains and plant matter. (The carnivore’s pancreas does not secrete cellulase to split the cellulose into glucose molecules), nor have dogs become efficient at digesting and assimilating and utilizing gains or plant material as a source of high quality protein. Herbivores do those sorts of things.

Read Canine and Feline Nutrition Case, Carey and Hirakawa Published by Mosby, 1995 A dog’s main diet in the wild is raw prey (meat). In the wild they eat very little vegetation at all and NO grains. What are anti-yeast foods I can feed my dog? Meats: Fresh, raw (organic when possible) chicken, fish, rabbit, turkey, goat, cornish hen, lamb beef, quail, duck. Vegetables:

Since dogs do not produce enough amylase or celulase to aid them in digesting vegetables, it is best to avoid them all together.

However, if you for your own sake, you feel the need to feed some kind of vegetation keep it as close to what a wolf or wild dog would eat – organic sprouts and leafy greens that have been throughly pulverized or juiced can be fed in very small amounts. NOT carrots, broccoli, and squash. It would be rare indeed (and actually never observed) to see a wolf in a vegetable patch eating these types of omnivore foods. Where they have been observed eating anything you don’t see in the wild is in pastures killing and eating sheep, cattle and even in chiken pens eating chicken. Fruits:

It is also best to avoid feeding fruits to a dog with yeast due to the sugar content. As the dog heals you may begin to add fresh organic blueberries, raspberries, Ninxga (gogi) berries and/or blackberries when they are in season.

Water: If you do not drink your own tap water then please, do not give it to your dog to drink. Use purified or distilled water… You don’t want to give your dog any illnesses due to water contamination. Cleansing and Detoxing It is important to detox or cleanse the blood. Toxins are the impurities that the filtering systems of the body are always at work to eliminate so that these impurities do not get into the blood stream. Once these contaminants ARE in the blood stream, the body begins to lose nutrition. The blood is either able to feed the body with good wholesome nutrients, or it is feeding the body with contaminates ultimately causing serious health issues. Every diagnosed disease has as its root cause – toxins. These toxins are circulating within your dog’s body with every single beat of its little heart. If you will clean up your dog’s internal body, then maintain its internal cleanliness on a regular basis, your dog can return to health and stay that way. Some Tried and True Detox Formulas

and Detox Blend Importance of Replenishing the Good/Friendly Bacteria The good bacteria that are attached to the inner intestinal walls are benign and do not harm our dogs (or us for that matter). They don?t make harmful chemicals or provoke immune responses and inflammation. In fact, these microorganisms actually protect us from the adherence of disease causing bacteria, like Salmonella and Shigella, which cause diarrhea. The disruption if the intestinal balance is where the troubles begin. The Candida yeast goes through cycles of overgrowth, where toxins are released throughout the system causing numerous or various symptoms. Candida makes a variety of toxic chemicals, which kill the good bacteria. The making of these chemicals prevents bacteria from coming back and enables the yeast to stay. If antibiotics have been used, they too kill all the good bacteria with the bad and the yeast gets a stronghold. Give your dog probiotics to re-build the good bacteria and to help choke out the yeast.

We recommend Fastrack Canine Gel OR Fastrack Microbial Powder

Provide vital “live food” dietary enzymes Live enzymes are completely absent from all cooked and processed pet foods. These key enzymes are what provide the necessary mechanisms to help the body produce powerful antioxidant enzymes. In combating yeast infections, they play a vital role by helping to flush out the dying Candida yeast toxins from the body and free radicals at a cellular level.

We recommend Fastrack Canine Microbial Daily Supplement

or Enzymes Pro +

Add a good, (natural source) vitamin /mineral supplement

Bovine Colostrum will help build back up and the balance the immune system as it working to eliminate the toxins and heal the body

Apple Cider Vinegar or Grapefruit Seed Extract may also be added to your dog’s drinking water What about External Care For The Skin?

Frequent bathing can actually cause more harm then good for the most part. However, if your dog still smells offensive and a good massage and/daily brushing does not help, you can give once weekly baths to clear the skin of dead and dying materials, however, please, only use a natural ingredient product with no chemicals, made especially for dogs such as Young Living Animal Scents or Spa Scents Revitalizing Shampoo that will not further clog the pores.

The use of essential oils or fresh (not chemically-treated) herbs in the shampoo or final rinse will assist naturally in killing the bacteria on the skin it’s self as well as start it healing. Such oils or herbs as Lavender, Myrrh, Rosemary, Eucalyptus or Melaleuca alternifoila are good for this purpose.

Instead of bathing or in between baths you can mist the dog’s skin with Young Living’s Lavaderm spray or HPN’s Soothing Mist

CAUTION: Use only 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils in your products. If you are unsure, you should consult with the seller or manufacture of the Shampoos or oils used in the products.

You can also use a rinse with a 50/50 mixture of raw, un-filtered apple cider vinegar and water which will also aid in healing and killing the bacteria growing on the skin; HOWEVER, APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR rinses should NEVER be applied to pets with any open lesions.

Time Frame For Healing It is important to note that this is a slow cleansing process which can often take 3-7 months before you see major changes with your dog. It took time for these toxins to build up in the body, it did not happen over night – it will take time for the body to eliminate the toxins, heal and be balanced again. The symptoms of cleansing and de-toxing usually occur about 3-4 weeks into the health life style changes you are making with your dog. These symptoms of cleansing, include itchiness and inflammation which will often appear to worsen during the initial two months of the program, inflamed and itchy ears, skin eruptions and/or flu-like symptoms like vomiting, loose stools, diarrhea and lethargy. This healing crisis effect of the body detoxifying can last for quite some period at times and requires patience on your part.

Make sure to keep an eye on your pet’s general health and temperature and certainly it is wise to work with and under the supervision of a veterinary naturopath or a “Holistic” Veterinarian. Most are available via internet or phone for consultations and support

Most dogs show response to treatment within a month however, in most cases the time needed to cleanse and heal averages out to be 1 month for every year of life! The time frame can be slightly longer for those dogs with a history of medication usage such as antibiotics, steroids and antihistamines. The length of treatment also seems proportional to the cooperation of the owner. In other words, if the owner administers antibiotics or steroids during the treatment program, and/or feeds a low quality diet, the healing will take longer. Treatment will be more effective if the owner remains persistent with the required regimen.

A yeast condition or infection is most often a very frustrating ailment that takes commitment on your part (dog owner/guardian).

*A consultation is highly recommended before any preventative program or treatment is started. A consultation includes a personalized diet and holistic program suggestions that are custom-tailored to your own dog’s individual and personal needs. While I will continue to provide and even add educational articles on the website and Blog, most of these are general in nature. I therefore encourage you to tailor a program specifically for your dog’s needs. This is particularly imperative in pets with complicated health issues, or if you’ve done a lot of outside reading and have conflicting information.

How To Administer Herbs To Pets

How To Administer Herbs To Pets

How To Administer Herbs
To Your Pet

by Dr Jeannie Thomason

I believe it is of utmost importance that I begin by stating that you should never attempt the use of herbs for healing your pet unless you have a good understanding of what is ailing your pet in the first place It is also important that you have a good understanding of the healing herbs them-self. Please, don’t guess …..check with a veterinary naturopath or animal herbalist first! There are now some holistic/natural vets out there that have studied botanical medicine. This information in this article is not meant to replace the diagnosis and advice of a licensed veterinarian. . It is important to remember first and always that carnivores (cats and dogs) have much shorter digestive systems than we as humans have. Fresh herbs are not able to be digested as they are in omnivores or herbivores. Therefore, the tincture form of an herb will work better for them. An acceptable alternative would be a stronger herbal tea than you would use for yourself.

Also, doses need to be compatible with your pet’s weight – small amounts for small animals, larger amounts for large animals. When in doubt, please consult a veterinary naturopath, animal herbologist or knowledgable holistic veterinarian. Administering several doses throughout the day, rather than one big dose once a day will speed the herbs into your pet’s system and boost the immune system much faster. And as with ourselves, no herb should be given to any animal on a continuous basis. Like us, their bodies will begin to build an immunity, and once that happens, that herb becomes useless medicinally.

A good rule of thumb for any herbal remedy for your pet is two weeks on, one week off. That gives the body time to work on its own, and gives you time to determine if the herbal treatment needs to be continued. There are exceptions to this rule, as with all rules, as in herbs that take a while to build up in the body to be effective. Just about any herbal remedy that you use for yourself can be adapted for use for your pet – just remember to use tinctures whenever possible, stronger teas when necessary and to only use as you are knowledgable on the herbs and cause of the symptoms in your animal. For overall general good health, one should always look to proper nutrition/ diet. If you are still feeding kibble or a canned/processed diet to your to your pets, do your research, into the natural species specific dietary needs of your pet. Raw meat in diet of a cat or dog, being natural carnivores, most often clear up a lot of mysterious ailments all by its self, as can the addition of raw fruits and vegetables in the omnivore or herbavore diet. If you are changing your pet to a raw species appropriate diet, please do so with the guidance of a veterinray naturopath, carnivore nutritionits or a seasoned raw feeder.

CAUTION: Aspirin and aspirin derivatives (i.e. white willow bark and white oak bark, salicylic acid), acetaminophen products (i.e. Tylenol), ibuprofen products (i.e. Motrin), can be fatal to cats. Do not use them. Do not give pets caffeine-containing herbs either, which definitely includes chocolate, which can be dangerous for dogs even though they like it.

Administering Herbs

Liquid Herbs You can use a dropper to administer or you can also use a syringe (without the needle). Be careful not to stab the back of the throat. It is recommended to insert the syringe while the mouth is closed as far back as the opening goes. I personally have found that if you pull the cheek away from the jaw/teeth and drop the liquid slowly into the pocket it forms, holding the animals head back that it will not only seep into the mouth but some is absorbed into the lining of the mouth. Administer the liquid slowly so as not to choke the pet. Most pets will accept this method best. It doesn’t affect the taste of their foods and it gets the dose down the quickest. You can also put liquids in the food or a broth. Topically – Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body and readily absorbs what is put on it. That’s why flea dips and other chemicals used on the skin are so toxic to your pet. If all else fails, you can rub the liquid into the pads of the feet or “bathe” the animal in a “tea” for absorption of nutrients. This makes it harder to know what you actually get administered, but it is a great option for the use of essential oils. as well

Tea You can brew the herbs as a tea and administer by dropper or syringe, or use as brewed in the water bowl in place of water. If not brewed too strong, they will drink as usual and you can increase strength as they adjust to it. This method may make it hard to get enough of the medicinal properties in to effectively help the condition, but it’s better than nothing and can be used in addition to other methods. You can brew relatively a strong concoction and add to a favorite meat broth for the water bowl. Have fresh filtered water available at times also. Dosage Consider assimilation ability, age, weight, extent of symptoms of deficiency. Always use common sense. Basic Formula to Follow – Take the weight of the pet and divide it by 150 lbs. (weight of average adult). This will equal the fractional amount of adult dosage required. Adult dosages are listed on labels. As a general rule to follow, start out slow on the first day to give the animal a chance to adjust to the taste and work up to the needed amount. Assume that the pet will, given the chance, gradually learn to accept and even enjoy the taste of herbs. Many pets actually begin to beg for their herbs just as they have been known to do for essenial oils and flower essences. The first time I heard this was with a hyper Rottweiler that would race to the door to “greet” anybody that visited. With an in-home business, this family needed some calming herbs for the dog. They began giving him Valerian Root and in about a week, the dog knew he needed it. Anytime they would grab a bottle of herbs, whether for themselves or him, the dog would come running and beg for a capsule. Their instincts are still tuned in to nature. If you have a hyper animal, you may want to give something to calm the pet during the period of illness. I have also been told of a feral cat that was feeding in somone’s back yard and she showed signs of a respiratory infection which concerned the family since these infections have been known to kill cats and often do it so quickly. They began putting liquid herbs on just a little bit of the food put out for here she would still be hungry. She nibbled at it, and as time passed, she began to eat it all up and the family was able to get it down her every couple of hours. In a couple of days, she was actually coming to seemingly “beg” for the herbs.

If you would like help with the use of herbs for your pets or learn more about putting your pets on a species appropriate raw diet, you may schedule an appointment for a consultation

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis

What Is Pancreatitis?

by Dr. Jeannie Thomason

When the pancreas becomes inflamed, the disorder is called pancreatitis. It is a disease process that is seen commonly in the dog. There is no age, sex, or breed predisposition. The function of pancreas br> The pancreas is a vital digestive organ that lies on the right side of the abdomen and has two functions: 1) to produce enzymes which help in digestion of food and, 2) to produce hormones, such as insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood sugar. The enzymes produced are necessary for digesting food. Dogs, being carnivores have no digestive enzymes in their saliva like an omnivore does so for them digestion does not and can not begin in the mouth. When our dogs are fed a cooked diet or diet with grains and vegetables in it, the pancreas gets over stimulated and overworked and in turn becomes inflamed. The inflammation itself can activate the digestive enzymes before they’re released in the intestines which can result in triggering the process of “self digestion”. The enzymes from the inflamed pancreas can also leak out in the abdominal cavity and damage the abdominal lining and other organs which only serves to add to a serious and often life-threatening situation. Causes of pancreatitis

The cause of pancreatitis can be one of many things and usually is related to a compromised immune system and improper diet. It is often associated with a cooked, rich, fatty meal. In some cases, it may be associated with the administration of cortisone; factors that can contribute to the development of pancreatitis can be infections; metabolic disorders including hyperlipidemia (high amounts of lipid in the blood) and hypercalcemia (high amounts of calcium in the blood); and/or trauma and shock. Middle-aged dogs appear to be at an increased risk of developing pancreatitis. Dogs with diets high in cooked fat, or dogs who ‘steal’ or are fed greasy ‘people food’ seem to have a higher incidence of the dis-ease. However, in most all cases these dogs are also fed a processed pet food diet.

What happens is, under normal conditions, digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas are activated when they reach the small intestines. In pancreatitis, these enzymes are activated prematurely in the pancreas instead of in the small intestines. This results in digestion of the pancreas itself. The clinical signs of pancreatitis are often variable, and the intensity of the disease will depend on the quantity of enzymes that are prematurely activated. There are two main forms of acute (sudden onset) pancreatitis: 1) the mild, edematous form and, 2) the more severe, hemorrhagic form. A few dogs that have and recover from an acute episode of pancreatitis may continue to have recurrent bouts of the acute disease, known as chronic, relapsing pancreatitis if their diet is never addressed. The associated inflammation allows digestive enzymes to spill into the abdominal cavity which can result in secondary damage to surrounding organs, such as the liver, bile ducts, gall bladder, and intestines. Nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea typically manifest the disease. The symptoms can also be a very painful abdomen, abdominal distention, lack of appetite, depression, dehydration, a ‘hunched up’ posture, vomiting, diarrhea and yellow, greasy stool. Fever often accompanies these symptoms. If the attack is severe, acute shock, depression, and death may occur. Laboratory tests usually reveal an elevated white blood cell count; however, many other things besides pancreatitis may also cause an elevated white blood cell count. The elevation of pancreatic enzymes in the blood is probably the most helpful criteria in detecting pancreatic disease, but some dogs with pancreatitis will have normal levels. Radiographs and ultrasound studies may show an area of inflammation in the location of the pancreas. Unfortunately, many dogs with pancreatitis will elude detection with any of these tests. Consequently, the diagnosis of pancreatitis may be tentative in some cases.

Will my dog recover?

The prognosis depends on the extent of the disease when presented and a favorable response to initial therapy. Dogs that present with shock and depression have a very guarded prognosis. Most of the mild forms of pancreatitis have a good prognosis.

Treatment/Management

The successful management of pancreatitis will depend on early diagnosis and prompt therapy. Resting the pancreas from its role in digestion by fasting the dog is one the best treatments of the mild form of the disease. The only way to “turn off” the pancreas is to withhold all oral fluids and food for a short period of time. This approach is of course, accompanied by intravenous fluids to maintain normal fluid and electrolyte balance is often needed in severe cases. In addition, natural anti-inflammatory herbs, proteolytic enzymes or homeopathic remedies are sometimes administered. The presence of shock necessitates the immediate and intense use of intravenous fluids. A Bland Diet?

Veterinarians will recommend you feed a “bland” diet of cooked rice and boiled chicken. This may be very easy on a human/omnivore’s digestive system but it is by no means easy for a dog/carnivore to digest and may only make matters worse. Dogs, being carnivores were designed to eat meat and bone in its RAW state. They are not equipped with enough of the right kind of enzymes necessary to digest cooked meats let along grains (Yes, rice is a grain). The easiest foods for a dog to digest under any circumstances is RAW. Raw meat and bones digest very quickly and do not require the pancreas to tax its self in producing enzymes in an attempt to digest something it was never intended to. Cooked food and grains have to remain in the dog’s stomach and intestines for many hours to ferment and breakdown before they can be digested. This is taxing to the digestive system.

Usually, a number of cells that produce the digestive enzymes are destroyed either prior to the attack or due to the attack its self which will cause insufficient digestion of foods to follow. This is known as pancreatic insufficiency and can be treated with daily administration of enzymes added in the food. If a significant number of cells that produce insulin are destroyed, diabetes mellitus can result and insulin therapy may be needed. In rare cases, adhesions between the abdominal organs may occur as a consequence of pancreatitis. However, most dogs recover with no long-term effects.

Recommendations to prevent and treat pancreatitis

1. Dietary enzymes

Enzymes are heat sensitive and easily destroyed in the processing/cooking of all commercial foods as well as in any cooked diet. If you are still feeding a cooked and/or processed diet, it is urgent that we put dietary enzymes back into the diet, in order to maintain proper wellness and not deplete their body of this important resource. Enzymes are of course needed to properly digest foods but they have other functions in the body as well, such as helping or preventing the following: * Allergic reactions * Arthritis * Orthopedic problems ~ HOD, OCO, Pano, Wobblers, Hip Dysplasia, ACL Epilepsy and Seizures * Vaccine reactions * Enzymes act as a natural anti-inflammatory ~ so you can avoid risky medicines * Enzymes Cleanse residual toxins from medicines, flea and parasite preparations. * Enzymes Boost the immune system * Reduce shedding * Reduce itchy ears * Prevent and aid in healing yeast infections, * Bladder infections, * Hotspots, Enzymes reduce healing time from injury and or surgery (ear cropping/bloat/c-sections), * Reduce recovery time from anesthesia. We recommend: 1. Naturally sourced digestive enzymes

Bio-Zyme

2. Probiotics or “friendly bacteria”

Probiotics are microorganisms necessary for a healthy and balanced intestinal tract. There are two types of bacteria found in the intestinal tract, good and harmful bacteria. Good bacteria, or probiotics, ensure good health, as they are absolutely vital to help: 1. Produce natural antibiotics, which can fight harmful bacteria 2. Regulate and increase hormone levels 3. Manufacture B group vitamins, biotin and folic acid 4. Stimulate the immune system 5. Reduce food intolerance 6. Increase energy levels 7. Inhibit the growth of some yeast 8. Absorb nutrients, antioxidants and iron from food that is eaten 9. Reduce inflammation 10. Increase digestibility of food 11. Enhance Immune Function

We recommend Fastrack Canine Gel and/or Fastrack Canine Microbial Supplement powder, which also contain enzymes as well!

3. Diet

The diet should be a raw, species appropriate diet of raw meat, bones and organs which is easily digested by our carnivorous pets.

Nutrition and your dog;s daily diet should be closely examined. Hopefully if you found this article you are already feeding your dog a raw meat, bone and organs diet or at the very least home cooking for him. However, if you are still feeding kibble or canned, processed foods, please read the labels on your dog’s food and see what the ingredients are and what the fat, salt and grain content are. All of these should be avoided as well as any vegetables – raw or cooked. Carnivores, such as dogs and cats, lack the enzymes necessary to digest and/or break down grains and vegetables so when fed, this puts a large drain and tax on the pancreas.

As stated above, pancretitis is usually caused by eating a very high fat, rich meal that the dog is not used to or due to the use of cortisone at some point. Natural, raw fats (emphasis on raw) are normally well tolerated by healthy dogs. It is the cooked, processed fats that tend to cause the problem. So, unless your dog has chronic pancretitis, there is really no need to switch to a lower fat diet for the dog, just a healthier one over all.

If you are still not quite ready to go with a totally raw diet, please, at least try a dehydrated or freeze dried diet such as Ziwi Peak that has very little to no vegetable matter in it. There is also a grain and potato free food that is layered with freeze dried ingredients that is still kibble but instead of having a synthetic, heated vitamin mixture sprayed on the kibble, the freeze dried raw ingredients are applied to the food instead so there is actually SOME nutritional value to the food. For more information on this great transition food, click HERE

The pancreas is in control of insulin production, which controls blood glucose regulation. This means that often dogs with diabetes can be prone to pancreatitis, and pancreatitis can lead to diabetes. This means it would be a good idea to watch the amount of sugar in the diet as well. Processed kibble and canned food are quite high in high glycemic vegetables, sweeteners, salt and some kind of grain. If you feed table scraps or cook for your dog, be sure to avoid feeding them cooked fat or fatty foods such as gravy, bacon, ham, sausage, margarine or processed foods. Feed only unseasoned meats and leave out the fat, veggies and go easy on the fruit making sure to feed organic when ever possible.

Exercise

Most of our dogs these days are left indoors all day while we go to work. They get very little to no exercise as a general rule. Exercise moves the lymph, improves digestion and intestinal movements, resulting in a healthier immune system and digestive system, which is important in preventing pancreatitis. Exercise can also keep the dog from becoming obese (Obesity is one predisposing factor to pancreatitis).

Rubicon Grain & Potato Free Dog Food

Great Life “Rubicon” Grain & Potato Free Formula Dog Food

While Dr Jeannie and The Whole Dog believe that dogs are carnivores and as such should be fed a raw meaty bone diet, we understand that there are still dog owners and care givers out there that are not quite ready for the switch or that need something to feed in an emergency or while slowly transitioning their dog to a raw diet. Great LIfe’s grain and potato free dog foods are made with freeze dried raw meats and naturally sourced vitamins, etc. that are applied so your dog is able to attain some LIVE nutrients as opposed to all other kibble on the market that has only a synthetic substance that sprayed on just before packaging.

Please read why Kibble and canned pet food is totally void of any true, live or natural nutrition HERE

For the past fifty years, commercial pet food companies have attempted to assure us that their pet foods are nutritionally complete and balanced”. or “scientifically balanced.” They tell us these statements are based on study after study; however, what they don’t tell you that these “studies” are based on human/omnivore nutrition. They are not based on carnivore nutrition or studies). Most of the pet foods on the market are grain based- whole wheat, barley, oats, corn meal or rice with added synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Thankfully, more consumers are becoming educated and know that grains and potatoes are not food for carnivores so, the commercial pet food industry, in an attempt to keep up their multi-billion dollar sales figures, came up the latest trend in pet foods: the addition of potatoes and elimination of some or all of the grains. The problem here is that they don’t tell you that Potatoes contain a carcinogen- *acrylamide- As a daily maintenance food, potatoes are not a health food! They may actually be a part of the cancer epidemic in pets!

The August 14, 2002 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, reported presence of high levels of acrylamide in carbohydrate rich foods like potatoes.

*Acrylamide induces gene mutations and has been found in animal tests to cause malignant stomach tumors. It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.

Testimonials:

I called my vet to ask her a simple question. What food does she suggest I feed my dogs, since I now feed Rubicon Grain and Potato Free and want to know if she agrees with the choice or would she recommend a better dog food? My vet left me a voicemail that she had some reservations about the Rubicon. She wondered aloud if you all had done any large-scale published nutritional studies like Purina, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Iams and (another brand name I cannot recall) have completed. When I listened to her voicemail, I was pretty shocked at her dog food suggestions. Her statement about the studies made me recall the tobacco companies’ published health studies which concluded smoking wasn’t dangerous. Considering both my dogs got hot spots when I fed them Eukanuba and Iams, I went to talk to my vet in person. I confronted my vet with a list of ingredients from the 5 different “big name” brands she mentioned. She was floored to see the amount of crap in the dog foods she suggested. As you may know, ingredients are listed in order of highest percentage ingredient by weight. When I showed her the “premium” ingredients from the brands she suggested versus the ingredients contained in Great Life, she was speechless. I told her that as a trained chemist I’d rather feed my dogs a dog food that contained cranberries and blueberries instead of Purina’s “added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2)” Half-Jokingly, I told her that my wife and I were thinking of eating Great Life given the quality of ingredients. As any medical professional, she didn’t want to admit that there might be something to better nutrition, but I definitely made her rethink her responses to me and she backpedaled on her earlier position and suggested that if Great Life isn’t causing problems then I may want to continue to feed it to them. The more entertaining part was that once she was out of earshot one of her vet techs who overheard us asked me for the brand name and store where I got the food, so he could give it to his dogs. My dogs love your food, at 5+ years old they exude energy, their coats are wonderful, and I feel good that the ingredients are so healthful. Thanks, Peter Nagy We have 2 pugs and one is 16 years old. She had pug encephalitis when she was a baby and they said she wouldn?t live passed a year but we have taken such good care of her with vitamins etc and she has lived far beyond the life expectancy of the average pug. In the past 2 years she has eatten very little no matter what we feed her and she is just all ribs and bones. We recently got your food and she dives into it! She has gained 3 lbs in one month and her ribs don?t stick out anymore. This food is incredible! Joan Charlie is fine. He is doing well on the Rubicon, we are feeding him the Lamb and using the Buffalo for a treat on occasion. He has the nicest poop! His coat looks good and the hint of pink under his white fur has decreased. I think that it is really agreeing with him. He is full of energy and loving life. Lori

The dogs seem to be doing great on Rubicon Grain Free Food. I am using that in the morning and then at night they get Embark with Chicken mixed in. They seem like very happy healthy pups right now 🙂 And they have good poops, too.

Aromatherapy for Animals

Aromatherapy for Animals

Odor Control

We use the Young Living Essential Oil Purification in our Rabbitry and it takes the ammonia out of the barn in 5-10 minutes!  The rabbits love it, as soon as they smell the oil  their ears start twitching and they look relaxed. Ammonia causes stress in rabbits which leads to dis-ease to so with less stress there is less dis-ease!

Hot Spots

This year my dog Ginger got a “hot spot” from some type of allergy (fleas maybe, although I never found any).  It really bothered her and she was constantly licking and chewing this area.  I never even thought about going to the vet.  Since I have started using YLEO this fall, I go first to these oils.  Reading in the EODR I came up with Elemi which I used everyday on the hot spot.  This made a huge difference, but as the bottle emptied itself I thought I’d try a different oil.  I used Roman Chamomile.  The spot was no longer hot– it had totally healed up but was very dry and flaky. The final oil I used was Spikenard.  This oil is amazing!!  I think if this happens again I will use Spikenard first and see if the healing process is shorter. In any case, Ginger healed up totally without losing all of her hair and without any discoloration in skin or fur.  She loved Spikenard and would come running and lick her lips when I opened the bottle, yet she never licked the oils off the “hot spot”.

Dog Seizure

Our dog is an outside dog and sometimes has a seizure.  Not having her dog house properly winterized, I had her on the porch recently.  She began having a seizure and I put Valor on all four paws.  Peace & Calming was massaged into her brain stem and dripped some on the floor in front of her nose.  She came out of this state quickly (about 2 minutes) and fully.

Rescue Dog With Anexiety

I have a “rescue” dog that had been badly abused. This poor baby totally freaked out when ever I tried to brush him, bathe him, clip his toenails or even try to pick him up to hold him. I bought some “Peace & Calming” and mixed a couple of drops with a very small amount of mixing oil and massaged into his feet and chest and shoulder area. You could just see him relax! I was able to pick him up an cuddle him for the first time and am able to slowly work at brushing him and doing his toenails now. Thank You! Kim

More Peace & Calming Use

My Champion Dog (in tact) began to go crazy when I had a female in heat come to be bred to him. Even though she was in another part of the house, he would not eat or sleep or stay calm for anything. A fellow dog breeder told me about Peace & Calming and lent me half a bottle. I applied it neat (straight with no mixing oil) in a small amount to the pads of his feet and massage it in. He was much calmer. I then mixed some with a little Lavender and bottled water and sprayed his bedding. He ate the next morning and had a good night’s sleep. This stuff is awesome!

Horse With Abcess

I’ve used hot water soaks, with about 10 drops of Frankincense, 8 drops of Cypress, 8 drops of Wintergreen, and 5 drops of Thieves Blend essential oils.

Soak twice a day until the bucked cools down….maybe about twenty minutes -if the horse will stand that long with it’s foot in a bucket.

The oils tend to bring the abcess to a head in just a few days and the healing is quite rapid. 🙂

Recurring Jaw Problem

My dog has had recurring jaw problem that makes it very painful for her to open her mouth.  She becomes very listless and pathetic, and recently had to go on steroids for a month per the vet.  The last time it came on, I rubbed lavenderon her paws and just inside her ear flap, which immediately stopped her from trembling with the pain, then used Thieves and Birch.  The next morning she was perfectly normal…faster than she’s ever recovered.  I continued to use Birch in the morning and evening for a few days and the problem has not recurred at all since.  The vet said it’s something akin to Lupus in humans…some sort of autoimmune problem that attacks the nerve or muscle, and could progress to strike other areas of her body.Karolynn Ward

Feline AIDSs

When my kitty tested positive for feline aids I diffused Purification several times a day and put lavenderon the tip of his nose (no he didn’t particularly like it).  He now tests free of feline aids.Oh yeah.  Give them lots of extra love and attention.  They get frightened when they’re sick.Be well,

Vanessa

Dog With Tumor I have used different oils for years and I love them. My husband who is very skeptical did not want to use them. He does not even USE aspirin, therefore I was not surprised at all. My friend has been using your oils and she has found them to be really helpful.

Our dog who is 15 years old and is in good shape had a cancerous tumor removed from her spine in April. Afterwards she was fine and could walk again. In August we noticed a large tumor on the side of her belly and she had trouble walking. I did not want her to be operated on again and I started using Frankincense. Three times a day I rubbed the tumor with the oil and in three days it was half the size.

The dog was walking again and within a week the tumor was completely gone. And guess who is a believer!!You guessed it, my husband. I am using the oils now for his asthma. But I thought this was worth telling you about. I have a hat box full of different oils and I make sure I do not run out. Keep up the good work.

Animal With Injuries

Just wanted to share something with everyone. One of our cats “took a walk” when a door was opened (she is an inside cat). Apparently, she was attacked by another cat throughout the night with a very deep scratch to the eye. We had noticed lots of blood spots in the garage, but could not find “Sara” the cat.  She had been hiding in house for a couple days when I found her and noticed the injury as she was very very traumatized and I am sure was in a lot of pain. However, she had been sufferering all this time in silence. I immediately washed the eye with a plant-based solution in distilled water and applied lavender diluted with V-6.When we took her to our vet, she was very concerned about her losing the eye as the eye was had a totally “milky” appearance. She put her on antibiotics for the infection, mixed her own blood serum with some of the properties removed, and a couple of types of eyes drops . I added to this protocol a solution.

frankincense and lavender in V-6 vegetable oil and applied with a cotton swab on the eyelid and then topped with Rose Ointment.  We had to administer all meds every 2 hours, round-the-clock over the weekend. I applied the oil solution twice a day to eye.

Upon our return to vet Monday, she requested we see a veterinarian optamologist 2 hours away to determine the exact damage to the eye. This doctor was very positive and said infection was the biggest concern, but she felt 90% chance she would see again, as the cut had not permeated the cornea, but we needed to really watch the infection. That was last Tuesday. Since then I have been applying frankincense neat (very carefully) around the eyelid, sealing with Rose Ointment and occasionally diffusing a few drops of frankincense and other anti-bacterial oils in her room where she was isolated from other cats.

Returning yesterday to local vet for check up, she is just AMAZED  how well she is recovering and said the cut has almost healed and the spidery veins now appearing around the retina is a positive sign and said “we were doing a great job”…I did mention using the Lavender to her and gel in beginning and she did not seem to have an adversion to this, she only nodded and said that should be ok. This truly was a leap of faith on my part in using the oils with the concerns that have been voiced using oils on cats. However, I truly felt very strong that this would help her, and trusted she would be healed and able to see again. The vet feels the eye will never “look” the same, but feels she will be able to see again and was a very lucky cat, indeed. We call it blessed. If all continues to go well, as we know it will, she will be released next week. Sara is one of 3 Himilayan cats we have and has a very timid nature, and is somewhat shunned by the other 2. This event has certainly brought us closer to her and vice versa and I believe the other cats are truly concerned for her. While this was a very unfortunate incident, it has brought everyone closer together…. Thought all cat lovers may appreciate this and feel one lesson I learned was “the more care /love I give, the more love I get in return”….even from our feline friends.  …. Gratefully…Charlene

EO’s and Ferrets

Thank God I bought an Essential 7 Kit and some V-6 mixing oil.  We happen to be lovers of ferrets and 5 of them own us.  One of our little guys(Fatz) has 3 cancers and was rapidly leaving us.  Fatz was down to 1 pound of hair and skeleton when I finally got a hold of Dr. Nancy Brandt in Las Vegas. I had a phone consult with her about Fatz and told her about the 3 cancers.

Peace and Calming diluted was the only oil she recommended I use on him in the raindrop fashion.  She treats ferrets like she treats cats medically —-  NO PHENOLS ——

The ferret got out of bed himself and started eating and drinking water within 24 hours.  He kept this up and the Drs. could not believe this animal came back to life!!!!!  I had kept Fatz alive nursing him with food and water for 2 weeks prior to this.  The other 2 oils she recommended were rushed here overnight.  Di-tone diluted, was applied to his stomach for his stomach cancer and Endoflex diluted was applied also Raindrop to spine, along with the Peace and Calming.

Note:  In response to questions regarding cats — Dr. Brandt says NO PHENOLS on cats.  She makes no bones about NOT using any other oils but YLE Oils.

DR. Brandt has been a lifesaver for us for this past 4 months with our animals.  She gave me an antibiotic oil ointment that can be used on cats and ferrets.  We have ferrets that we have used it on and also a cat that cut her paws stepping on some glass.  The recipe is as follows:

Approximately 1 Tablespoon V-6 mixing oil

8 drops cypress

5 drops lemongrass

5 drops lavender

2 drops lemon

2 drops helichrysum

Apply when you think it necessary.

MRSA and Essential Oils Research : Whole Dog News

MRSA and Essential Oils Research : Whole Dog News

MRSA has been around for many years, but only recently has attention been paid to the possibility of it affecting companion animals. In a major article of the emergence of MRSA in animals, Tim Nuttall and Robert Duquette illustrated how MRSA has become an increasing problem and the importance of taking it seriously in veterinary practice.

MRSA is an opportunistic infection that can kill vulnerable animals. It is most dangerous when infecting a surgical wound, and we are currently seeing even healthy animals losing limbs as a result of this infection.

The greatest risk of infection or colonisation tends to occur in veterinary practices, and research at the Royal Veterinary College, London has found that 20% or more of veterinary staff can carry the bug.

Good clinical practice can prevent infection and colonisation, and effective screening can reduce the risk further. These depend upon veterinary staff being well trained and skilled, and on pet owners understanding how to work with their vet in an effective and knowledgeable way.   For more information about pets and MRSA please visit the Bella Moss Foundation.

Meanwhile here is some great information (mainly with humans but still applicable to animals) on how essential oils can kill mrsa:

By oildrops In MRSA News and Helps | Therapeutic grade essential oils are being shown through recent research to act as a natural antibiotic. With all of the news about MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) incidents increasing, here’s some food for thought about the alternatives offered by nature since the garden of Eden days.

1) OVERVIEW.

The discovery of pharmaceutical antibiotics around 80 years ago was touted as a panacea for humanity. While their use has clearly saved many lives, in recent years their overuse and misuse has taken a tremendous toll on the health of people everywhere, contributing to the creation of the now- infamous SuperBug.

According to Annie Wong-Beringer, Pharm.D., associate professor of clinical pharmacy at the USC School of Pharmacy, “Inappropriate antibiotic use may kill beneficial bacteria, opening the door for harmful bacteria to establish themselves in their place. It also may toughen up some bacteria by encouraging them to mutate and develop drug resistance.â€

Drug resistance is considered to be one of the leading causes of deaths in the U.S. According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 70,000 die each year from it.
These patients acquired the infection while they were in a hospital being treated for something else, according to the May 1997 documentary The Coming Plague. No known antibiotics can help these patients, and they die.

To make matters worse, experts estimate that physicians in the United States alone, write 50 million antibiotic prescriptions a year to treat disease actually caused by viruses, which antibiotics do not affect. Part of the reason may be patients’ or caregivers’ expectations. According to a CDC study, pediatricians prescribe antibiotics 65 percent of the time if they sense that parents expect them, but only 12 percent of the time if they sense parents do not expect them.

The western medical establishment is stymied. It’s looking for a solution through continued pharmaceutical research and the development of even more antibiotics…which created the problem in the first place. Duh! In addition, the big Pharma companies don’t even want to put money into antibiotic research, since it does not produce sustained profits. Think about it. They dump millions and millions of dollars into research to create the latest super antibiotic. It works for a short time and then becomes useless because the bacteria has mutated to save their own lives! (What’s a poor little bacterium to do?!)

If one wholly subscribes to the mainstream paradigm, the situation does indeed seem grim.

Enter our friends, therapeutic-grade essential oils!

Essential oils are naturally antibiotic and antiviral, as has been documented in research around the world and more recently in the U.S. If you browse through a classic book like “The Practice of Aromatherapy†first published 25 years ago by French medical doctor, Jean Valnet, you will find innumerable references to such research and to the efficacy of essential oils in all kinds of situations.

In 1997, studies conducted at Weber State University on Young Living’s Thieves oil showed it to have a 99.96% success rate against airborne bacteria. The bacteria cultures were sprayed in an enclosed area, and Thieves essential oil blend was diffused for a given amount of time.  After only 10 minutes of exposure, there was a reduction of 82% in Micrococcus luteus, 96% in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 44% in Staphylococcus aureus.

Below is a wealth of information on the antibiotic qualities of essential oils along with testimonials from Young Living members and some essential oil recipes.

Young Living customers understand that they have in their hands a precious, delightful and effective way to strengthen their bodies and uplift their spirits, using the naturally powerful and effective aromatic resources of the healing plant kingdom.

2) ANTIBIOTICS VS. THERAPEUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL
OILS, by Joan Barice, MD (Young Living Member)

Speaking as a medical doctor, all physicians are aware of the increasing problem of resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. This is especially a problem with bacteria which cause life threatening infections. It is a result of overusing antibiotics, and of using them when they are not

appropriate.

Overusing antibacterial soaps may also contribute to the problem. Prevention is best, of course. Allowing natural immunity to work when infections are self-limiting or not likely to cause serious consequences is also important, as is not treating viruses with antibiotics which won’t work

anyway.

Essential oils can be very effective in treating many bacterial, viral and other infections, without causing resistance. The natural variation inthe chemical constituents in whole plants depending on climate, altitude, and other factors protects against this resistance, as do the many chemical constituents in whole oils as opposed to

using one isolated “active†ingredient.

The problem is, most doctors are not trained in using oils, but are well trained in using potent antibiotics. If you are trying to enlighten a doctor, who generally has had no training on essential oils, I would suggest providing scientific references that give the available evidence of the

effectiveness of essential oils in treating infections.

We are impressed by scientific research and usually will not listen to “anecdotal†evidence†that it worked for some people. Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt’s book Medical Aromatherapy, healing with essential oils, has been suggested and is a great reference. I have used it to give talks to medical

doctors about essential oils.

Published articles on essential oil research, especially those in medical journals would be very good. Here are just

a couple examples:

The EODR cites some research: 1998: Chao studied a blend of oils patterned after that used by 15th century thieves containing cinnamon, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus and lemon was diffused in a closed room in which bacteria cultures were sprayed. There was an 82% reduction in M. Luteus, a 96% reduction in P. Aeruginosa, and a 44% reduction in S. Aureusbioaerosols following 10 minutes of

exposure.

Another study compared the effectiveness of essential oils to antibiotics – preliminary results showed cinnamon and oregano are comparable with Penicillin and Ampicillin in

inhibitory activity against E. coli and Staph. aureus.

From a medical journal: TEA TREE OIL: THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE ANTIMICROBIAL HYPE Because of increasing resistance to antibiotics, interest in finding alternatives is strong. Tea tree oil (TTO) has been widely used in Australia for 80 years and is active against many

micro-organisms.

A pilot study of 30 MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) carriers comparing routine mupirocin nasal ointment and triclosan skin wash with TTO ointment and wash, showed one third were completely

cleared by TTO but only 13% by conventional treatment.

In another trial of TTO in the treatment of herpes cold sores, the oil was found to assist healing to a similar degree as topical 5% acyclovir. The oil has about 100 components but 7 terpenes and their related alcohols constitute 80 to 90% of the whole oil. Several of these components have been shown to reduce levels of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Terpenes are lipophilic and partition into the phospholipid layer of cell membranes, disrupting normal structure and function. Allen, P., LANCET 2001, 358 (9289) 1245 or: Janssen AM et al, 1987. Antimicrobial activity of essential oils:

1976-1986 literature review. Planta Med 53 (5) 395-398.

This article is not in a medical journal, but still would be good to use as evidence: Antiviral and Antimicrobial Properties of Essential Oils, by Dominique Baudoux, available on the internet at:

www.positivehealth.com/article-abstract.php?articleid=84

Kurt Schnaubelt’s book has a list of some basic research,
including the following:

1960: Maruzella demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal effects of hundreds of aromatic compounds 1987: Deininger and Lembke demonstrated antiviral activity of essential oils and their isolated components 1973: Wagner and Sprinkmeyer in 1973 did research on a 170 year old blend of distilled oils still available in Germany. The effects of melissa and the other oils in Kosterfrau Melissengeist had been empirically known since Paracelsus (about 1500). They concluded that, with varying degrees of intensity, there was an inhibiting influence on all the bacteria tested, (Pneumococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphlococcus aureus haemolyticus, Neisseria catarrhalis, Streptococcus haemolyticus, Proteus vulgaris, Hemophilus influenza, Haemophilus pertussis, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli-Aerobacter group, various Corynnebacteria, and Listeria) and stated the large spectrum of this inhibitory action is as broad as or even greater than that of

wide-spectrum antibiotics.

They also showed KMG has sedative and spasmolytic properties. 1995 Deininger et al. Demonstrated the broad spectrum of antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal activity of essential oils and their components as well as effectiveness for upper respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital systems and for nervousness and arterial

conditions.

Included many different bacterial species, aflatoxin forming fungi, quantitative proof of the antiviral effectiveness of different essential oil constituents with special attention to their cell toxic effects on human cells. Showed antiviral effects against herpes and adenoviruses with a broad spectrum of activity. Showed oils including Klosterfrau mellisengeist terpenes could be shown curatively and preventively in animal experiments after otherwise lethal herpes injections were administered, and induce a

significant increase of immunoglobulins.

Schnaubelt lists even earlier basic science research showing it has been known a long time that essential oils

have antimicrobial effects:

1800-2002: Numerous animal and in vitro studies – evidence that all essential oils are antiseptic, some more than others and that many are effective against certain fungi, bacteria and viruses. 1881: Koch demonstrated the bactericidal action of essence of turpentine against anthrax spores 1887: Chamberland demonstrated bactericidal activity of essences of oregano, cinnamon and clove on bacillus anthracis 1910: Martindale showed essential oil of oregano is the strongest plant-derived antiseptic known to date, 25 to 76 times more active than phenol on

colobacillus.

Because of our training, because we are not trained about essential oils, and do not want to harm our patients by using something we do not know anything about, many doctors will insist on having still more research, and conclusive “evidence-based†research data before they will consider recommending oils for patients with an infection, and they will use antibiotics when they know them to be

effective treatment for a particular infection.

I know from my own experience that essential oils can be very effective, and will not hesitate to use them when they are the most appropriate treatment. If, on the other hand, I had a life threatening infection, and I do not have time to try something that will take longer, and there is a medical treatment that is known to be highly effective and safe, I

would use it.

3) THE ANTIBIOTIC CRISIS, by Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D.

The following extract is taken from Medical Aromatherapy: Healing with Essential Oils by Kurt Schnaubelt, 1999, Frog, Ltd. North Atlantic Books Berkeley CA. This excerpt is from

Chapter 5, pp. 72-74.

“There is conclusive evidence on the destructive consequences of the overuse of antibiotics (and also how to avoid it). Antibiotic pressure on an organism can be a cofactor in immune deficiency conditions. Antibiotics were originally prescribed to fight bacterial diseases. But once these drugs became major moneymakers, their marketing took on a life of its own. Economic interests dictates finding more uses for a product that is already selling well, because sales increase without new development costs. Research to find additional uses for products is eagerly sponsored and eventually research and sales create a new reality. Unaware of the link to mass destruction of their immune systems, an unsuspecting generation upped its

antibiotic intake.

“Antibiotics taken by small children often create the diseases they aim to cure. Premature antibiotic use during the onset of a childhood disease will deprive the immune system of the opportunities to interact with the pathogen. An inactivated immune system does not learn to recognize intruding microorganisms, nor does it learn to build antibodies. The result? A child will quickly relapse with the same disease and the cycle repeats. A reoccurring disease becomes chronic and leads to an overall debilitation of the

body.

“Another potentially even greater problem is the seemingly unstoppable advance of resistant bacteria. Bacteria, resistant to most or all of the known antibiotics, are menacing hospitals and their patients. The development of these “super germs†was brought on by the reckless use of antibiotics in the meat industry as well as their over prescription by doctors. In his sanely radical book, Spontaneous Healing, (1995, Alfred Knoph) Andrew Weil comments: ‘Doctors must bear much of the responsibility for getting us into our growing predicament with aggressive bacteria; by over prescribing and mis-prescribing

antibiotics, they have brought on the coming catastrophe.’

“Antibiotics are still widely prescribed by doctors for viral conditions such as the common cold or the flu despite the fact that they are not effective in these cases. The depth of the conditioning becomes obvious when antibiotics display

placebo effects.

“Workers in an office struggle with the flu for a week or two and, at some point, a few take antibiotics with the following

results.

“Outcome 1: No obvious differences are observed between those who take the antibiotics and those who don’t. The flu

comes and goes.â€

“Outcome 2: Some of those who took antibiotics recover quickly. A typical belief is that the antibiotics ultimately

cured the flu.

“Outcome 2 is extremely puzzling. Influenza is a viral infection and antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Still, these individuals claim that they worked. There are two possible explanations: 1. The immune status of some individuals is so compromised from antibiotics overuse or other causes that a flu virus will automatically trigger bacterial secondary infections of such severity that relief from an accompanying symptoms is perceived as the antibiotics being effective against the flu itself. 2. Our deep conditioning to believe in the effectiveness of antibiotics

triggers improvement. The antibiotics were a placebo!â€

“The antibiotics crisis is an example of the fact that commerce is not concerned about the consequences it creates for human life. All aspects of modern existence are penetrated by the goal to maximize profits. Sadly, this has

been most successful in medicine.â€

“Approximately two decades ago the projections for worldwide sales of pharmaceuticals for the year 2000 were estimated to reach about $250 billion. This number was a gross under- estimation; the health -care industry currently grosses almost a thousand billion dollars and the biggest-selling pharmaceutical drugs each generate one billion dollars annually in the United States alone. Potential pharmacological breakthroughs generate corresponding changes in stock prices and make headlines in the business sections. The profit motive permeates the medical

world completely.â€

“As a result, diseases are essentially classified according to the availability of drugs, which are the only form of therapy that can be produced on an industrial scale. The drug companies have an ideal partner in scientific medicine, which ignores (for the most part) social and psychological causes of disease. The mechanic “physician†is offered a

tool that can be reproduced without limit.â€

4) TREATING THE FLU WITH ANTI-MICROBIAL YOUNG LIVING OIL FORMULA by Terry S. Friedmann, M.D.,

A.B.H.M.

The flu season is upon us and this one is a doozie. It came early here in Colorado and we have already had some deaths. Obviously the virus has mutated and the vaccine doesn’t work very well. So remember my antimicrobial formula [that I recommend] for my patients. Place in a “00?

capsule the following:

12 drops of Thieves 6 drops of oregano

2 drops of frankincense

At the first sign of the flu, take one capsule every four hours for three days and then one capsule every eight hours for

four to six days.

This is powerful, so don’t use it for just a cold or as a preventative. This formula should not be used on children under 12 years of age or on pregnant wormen. Ages 12-17

years use one half of the above formula.

7) TESTIMONIALS FROM YOUNG LIVING MEMBERS.

Chronic Sinus Infection:

I had been living with a “stuffy nose†for probably about 20 years when I found the oils. What I was really dealing with was a combination of food allergies and environmental allergies. (confirmed by doctor’s tests) This caused repeated acute sinus infections, often recurring several times a year, as well as chronic sinusitis. I had two sinus surgeries, but they didn’t really help much in the long run. A Kleenex box was my constant companion. (People used to joke with me that I should buy stock in the Kleenex

company)

Since I found the oils (soon 3 years ago) I have not once taken antibiotics, and I used to have to resort to it all the

time.

Lately I have not even had the beginnings of a sinus infection, but earlier, when I could feel one coming on, what I did was heat up a big pot of water. Then I would take a big towel and lean over the pot and cover my head, as I put oils in, one drop at a time – then breathe deeply – then

another drop and so on.

I just looked in the EODR. Collected all the oils and blends that I had that were listed in the section for sinus infection, and went through them one by one. I would repeat this daily, until my nose cleared. This was the first time ever that I did not have to resort to antibiotics – and I have not had a full blown sinus infection since I started using the

oils.

As for clearing the allergies, for me it was a matter of avoiding the foods that caused them (mainly dairy) and also taking enzymes every day and with every meal, as well as taking MSM on a regular basis. Enzymes & MSM truly

do make a big difference in staying well.

I have been so ill for the last three years. Each time I would get a sinus infection, it would move down into my lungs and I would end up with horrible asthma attacks. I would be put on a double round of antibiotics and prednisone to help get the episode under control. Then within a few weeks I would have another infection and go through this whole routine again using a different antibiotic. This last time there was no time between coming off of the antibiotic and having the infection cropping up again I was scared to death. The doctors had uses every antibiotic on the market and I was still sicker than sick. I was out of luck with conventional medicine. Thank God some one posted Gary Young’s receipe for antibiotic resistant oils. I took the oils internally for three days and my infection was gone!!!! I also used several strong anti-viral oils on my back with a hot wet towel at night for 5 nights. No more coughing up horrible yellow-green mucus. No more terrible sinus pain. No more asthma. By the second day of taking the oils I stopped taking the antibiotics that the doctor had prescribed for me. I know now that I won’t be needing conventional antibiotic

medications anymore.

H-Plyori:

In 1994 after not being ill a day in my life except for occasional cold and bout with the flu I almost died due an internal bleed from my duodenum. Unbeknowns to me I had a bacteria in my stomach by the name of heliobacter pylori which caused an ulcerative rupture in my duodenum. I required a blood transfusion of 3 pints to replace the lost blood. I was then given 2 antibiotics at the same time to rid me of the bacteria. Four weeks after completing this protocol it was evident that it did not work as I almost had another bleed. It was then suggested by my specialist that I take a regimen of 8 different drugs at the same time for 21 days with no guarantees for success. I refused because I was told to expect substantial side effects and there was another drug I could take instead called ranitidine (zantac), an acid blocker that would prevent the bleeds although it would not get rid of the bacteria. I chose this route reluctantly. Later I found a natural product containing MSM, although not quite the quality formulation of Young Living’s Sulphurzme which worked similarly to reduce acid. Then in Oct./99 I read about a natural antibiotic protocol recommended by Dr. Gary Young. It involved using the essential oils of Lemon, Mountain Savory, and Oregano together and internally. I decided to try it and started very slowly using only a fraction of what Dr. Young recommended and within 4 days I knew the bacteria was history. To this day (March 23/00) I have not had any stomach challenges which had previously caused me

discomfort on a daily basis for almost 5 years.

For H-Plyori:

Para-Free and Di-Tone did it for me. I had a bad case, but the last time they stuck a tube down to my stomach, it was all gone. So were the polyps on the other end — surprising

because the time before, I had nine.

The medical treatment for H-Pylori, by the way, is Biaxin (a horrible, strong antibiotic that made me too sick to continue taking it), along with Prevocid or Prilosec (types of

antacids).

Kidney Infection:

This week my Grandmother rebounded very quickly from a kidney infection. We used juvaflex and cypress over her kidneys along with hot compresses three times a day. Also on her feet. I also massaged various oils (frankincense, lavender , orthosport massage oil) on her back and legs to help with her soreness from being in bed for several days.

These oils are magnificent!

Urinary Tract Infections:

My Aunt has chronic UTI’s as in antibiotics every four weeks. This has been going on for a very long time. She started using Inspiration, rubbing the oils over the bladder area, the lower abdomen, and also on the bottom of the feet, and around the ankles. Within two days the pain was gone. Within two weeks she had a checkup with her Dr. and he said her urine specimen was the best he has ever

had from her.

-Kathleen

I had a urinary tract infection and decided to use my Young Living Essential Oils instead of going to the Doctor. I used 3-4 drops of Mountain Savory with a few drops of massage oil base and massaged this on my abdomen just above the pubic bone. I did this 2 times daily for three days. I also took Alkalime 2 times daily for three days. The symptoms were gone in 1 1/2 days, but I contined for three days to be sure I had it totally cleared up. I also drank lots of water. This was a terrific solution to the infection. I checked my medical records and prior to knowing about and using essential oils (about 5 years ago), I had a UTI and of course went to the Doctor. I was put on antibiotics. A week later I had a yeast infection because the antibiotic wiped out all the good flora in my body, so the yeast took over. Then a month later the UTI was back and I had another round of antibiotics. So essential oils are a great solution

for clearing up this problem.

Enlarged Tonsils & Adenoids:

I have a grandson who was born with enlarged tonsils and adenoids. The Doctor didn’t want to remove them and kept feeding him antibotic and decongestants. About 3 years ago, Devin was sick with tonsillitis again. I used oregano diluted 5/1 and rubbed all over his neck and throat, around ears and on sinus areas. Also on his feet. I did this a couple of times daily for about 3 weeks. His infection was gone in a few days but for some reason I continued to apply it. He did not have another bout of tonsilitis for 6 months, I used the same oil on him again for 3 weeks. It has now been 2 1/2 years and Devin doesn’t have tonsillitis anymore. Tonsils are still slightly enlarged but not nearly what they were. He still gets an occasional cold. We use

Melrose or R.C. or Raven.

Strep:

My 15 year old son just got over strep throat and “mono sites in his blood†according to the doctors diagnosis. I refused to fill the antibiotic rx he gave me but instead gave my son 12 drops thieves, 6 oregano, 2 frankincense in the 00 caps 3 times a day, rubbed thieves on his throat and made a spray of thieves and distilled water to spray down his throat…and also rubbed thyme, oregano and thieves on his feet. After just a day and a half his pus balls were gone…and his throat was feeling better! I also ordered the Immunetune caps and immupower oil and gave that to him once a day along with lots of water…he is back to school and doing great! We also make a big deal out of taking the NingXia Red Juice with dinner…put it into stemwear

glasses and my teens love it!

Ear Infection:

My son came home from school yesterday complaining of a very sore ear, thought I could wait till today to take him to the doctor to have my suspicion that he had an ear infection, and put him to bed later that night, he woke up at 12 midnight, crying and complaining of a very sore ear, grabbed my essential 7 package and the desk reference and got to work, since I only have the E 7, I used only the oils it mentioned, I did as was suggested, rubbing a small amount of oil on my palm and placing it in the outside of the inner ear, and repeating with the other oils (Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and Purification), and then used vegetable oil to dilute it, placed some oils with the vegetable oil on a cotton ball and had him hold it on his ear. Then I rubbed the same oils on the feet at the proper places and then held him and talked to him, he fell asleep, still complaining about his sore ear, he woke me up this morning, saying “Mommy, my ear is all better, can I go to

school?!†I love these oils.

My 85-year old mother had an ear infection so went to her ear physician. He gave her antibiotic eardrops to put in her ear. The eardrops made her ear worse so back she went to the physician a couple of days later and received a second prescription. This time there was a slight improvement, but she kept having mild pains in her ear for a couple of weeks

so she was about to go back for a third visit.

I had her use oregano and clove oils on the vitaflex points under her two little toes and I put some V-6 oil and a drop of Thieves on a cotton ball which she rested in her ear opening. The next day her ear felt fine. I had her repeat the

regimen for 5 days and she’s been fine since.

Infections:

I loaned my Melrose to a friend of mine who is a nurse and had a bad infection in her big toe. She had tried a couple of different antibiotics (oral) and salves of various types and had seen 3 different doctors. Surgery had been recommended as the next step but I caught her in time and told her to apply Melrose a few times a day. That was on a Saturday. On Tuesday she called all excited to say the infection was almost gone. By Friday, she said her toe was

almost glowing with new “baby†skin!

Abscessed Root Canal:

My experience with YLEO and dental was an abscessed root canal, of course I was written a script for antibiotics……..which is still in the cupboard. I took a capsule of oregano ( for the infection ) one of geranium ( for inflammation) followed up every four hours repeat topping each capsule off with a couple drops of Helichrysum or lemon. I did this the first day, the second day I did it every 6 hours…….the third day I was fine swelling was gone, pain was gone. I Took the ‘caps’ for another day or so just to make sure, so all together three days , four at the most compared to 7 on antibiotics., and the bonus is ‘no yeast infection’ which I always got upon

taking antibiotics.

Sulfurzyme is a break through formula that combines pharmaceutical-grade MSM with Chinese Wolfberry. Sulfurzyme combines MSM, a natural form of sulfur found in all living organisms, with Chinese wolfberry, a revolutionary superfood from Inner Mongolia. According to many health professionals, this product has the potential to revolutionize how millions of people deal with chronic pain, inflammation, and allergies. According to Ronald Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., MSM works be restoring flexibility to cell membranes and slowing down the breakdown of cartilage. “It also inhibits the transmission of pain impulses along the nerve fiber”. “The results we have been seeing with this product is mind-boggling,” stated D.Gary Young, N.D. “What makes this product different from the other products is the exceptional purity of MSM we use. This pharmaceutical grade MSM in Sulfurzyme is light years away from the low-grade material imported from Asia. Unfortunately, a great deal of the MSM sold in the U.S. originates from Asia.” “I believe that the key ingredient that make Sulfurzyme so effective is the Chinese Wolfberry. With over 18 amino acids and 21 minerals, the wolfberry is one of the most nutrient-dense foods known” stated Dr. Young.

“Few people realize that in order us and our pets to properly metabolize the sulfur in MSM, the body requires minerals like molybdenum. When these are missing, MSM does not work as well. This is why wolfberry is so important.”

Dr. Lawrence agrees. “What makes Sulfurzyme unique is a combination of high-grade MSM and Chinese wolfberry. The therapeutic potential of the two together is enormous.” “I intend to make Sulfurzyme a central part of my practice,” Dr. Lawrence added. “I expect to see results that will far surpass that of traditional MSM formulations.” Dr. Ronald Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D. and author of ‘The Miracle of MSM’ stated “Sulfurzyme is, by far, the best MSM product currently available. I highly recommend it for all of my patients.

We have 4 older adult dogs, three are 12 years old one is 15 years old they have been getting one capsule each of Sulfurzyme daily in their dog food. Until I ran out of the Sulfurzmye. I forgot to reorder it. Within 2 weeks my German Sherpard was limping, she was having trouble with her hips and front legs. She was in a lot of pain and I planned to take her to the Vet when my Sulferzyme came in. Within a few days she was back to her old self. I always wondered if the Sulferzyme helped their bones and muscles, now I know for sure it does. It is a know fact that German Shepherds have hip dysplasia as they get older. I gave my dog relief and saved a vet bill. When she was without her Sulfurzyme and limping badly I put Pan Away or Wintergreen on her paws this helped ease her pain.

Started giving our yellow lab (9 yrs.) sulfurzyme tablets. He has arthritis so bad, some days I could just cry watching him try to get up to greet us. About 2 mos. into the sulfurzyme he met me with his pull toy–something he hasn’t wanted to do in ages! Then, a few days later he RAN to greet us when we got home–

Coincidence? I think not. He just seems to feel and act so much better. God Bless, Barby

My Mastiff was diagnosed with “old age” arthritis in his hips. The vet suggested rimadyl but I had read too many bad side effects, including DEATH! Looking for a more natural alternative, I got in touch with Jeannie at The Whole Dog. She suggested I look into Sulferzyme, Vitamin C and NingXia Red for Sam.

Not being able to afford to buy all of these at once, I started with just the powdered Sulferzyme on his food once a day. Before the month was up and I was able to order the NingXia Red, there was already improvement in Sam’s movement. I was assisting him in getting up from lying down but he was doing more of the work and effort. I kept Sam on the Sulfurzyme and now am adding the NingXia Red to his drinking water every day. He continues to improve and his coat has never looked better and shedding so little! Thank You Jeannie and Young Living! Karen White

Sulfurzyme Testimonies For Humans:

Auto Accident Neck and Back Injuries

I have been using the Sulfurzyme for over a year now with great results. I was in an automobile accident and suffered neck and low back injuries. I used a cane any time I was out of the house and sometime when home as well. Some days were so bad that I used a walker. I have been brought to my knees in extreme pain and put in a wheel chair to get to the dr. Since I have been on the Sulfurzyme I have not used even the cane except for very occasionally. I believe the Sulfurzyme is doing the trick! I have much less pain, my nails are stronger and my hair is thick and full! I love this stuff! Blessings, Pam

Energy with Multiple Sclerosis

I was diagnosed with MS in 1999. A year ago, I got into a daily routine of taking Sulfurzyme, JuvaTone, VitaGreen, and Ningxia Red Here is what I know: I feel better than I have in years and have regained energy that I thought was lost due to my disease. I have lost weight with little effort and rarely get sick. The number of ‘episodes’ with MS has dramatically decreased. Young Living oils and supplements help to give my body the support that it needs to maintain good health. Julie Price

Migraines, high blood pressure, high cholesterol

Our eldest son, Mikol, no longer suffers with seasonal allergies nor has needed an inhaler in almost three years (Sulfurzyme, Valor, and Lavender)! Knowing what I know now,I would add NingXia Red Juice to the mix. When diagnosed with migraines, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol he chose to use Young Living supplements and therapeutic grade essential oils. Using NingXia Red Juice, Sulfurzyme, BodyGize, and therapeutic grade essential oils such as peppermint, lavender, and Aroma Life he has lost weight and no longer suffers with migraines, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The last time we went to the kidney specialist she said she bet against him when he stated he intended on taking the “natural” approach to his health care – refusing to fill the prescriptions she wanted to write.

Now she believes! Nicole Hutnik

Sulfurzyme helped my stiff hands and bursitis

Ever since I was little I can remember all my joints cracking. In my 20’s I developed bursitis in my right shoulder and in my 30’s my hands started getting really stiff in the joints.

I started using Sulfurzyme capsules about a week ago and my hand joints are much more fluid and less stiff. Also, my shoulder always had a low tolerance for certain positions which I can now easily maneuver without any pain, tightness or stiffness at all.

This is such a blessing since my mother has been diagnosed with osteosporosis and my maternal grandmother died of bone cancer. I love Young Living products! Michelle O

Low Back Pain

I whole heartedly agree with the Sulfurzyme testimonials. I used to sleep with pillows under my knee because of extreme discomfort. My low back was also in agony. Both as a result of 10 years in the Hardwood Flooring Business. TWO WEEKS on Sulfurzyme and the discomfort was history. I dosed heavy for the first two weeks, and then went to a maintenance dose, and have remained discomfort free. I prefer the powder as I like to take it with plenty of water. Love, Lars

Aromatherapy & Essential Oil Use For Animals

Aromatherapy & Essential Oil Use For Animals

What Are Essential Oils? Essential oils are the subtle, aromatic and volatile liquids extracted from the flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, bark and roots of herbs, bushes, shrubs, and tress, through distillation. According to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, priests and physicians were using essential oils thousands of years before Christ to heal the sick. They are the oldest form of remedies and cosmetics known to man and were considered more valuable than gold. There are 188 references to oils in the Bible. Science is only now beginning to investigate the incredible healing properties of essential oils. Supports a Healthy Immune System Repel Virus Repel Bacteria and other microbes Mood Elevating Antiseptic Oxygenating High in Antioxidants Aromatherapy for animals is the art and science of using plant essential oils to treat both the emotional body and the physical body of animals. It takes into consideration the whole animal, so you are not just treating one specific symptom. The oils work to support the animal’s whole being in an effort to get rid of the disease. Essential oils have a positive effect on an animals, and leave no toxic residue in the way synthetic drugs do. Essential Oils have a fast acting therapeutic action on the body and some, like lavender and lemon are adaptogenic, which means they are able to adapt to what the body needs at the time. Essential oils work to support every aspect of the animal.

What is Aromatherapy?

I want to start out by stating what Aromatherapy is NOT. It is not sented candles or incence or bubble bath, Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils. While the oils’ most obvious property is that they are aromatic, it is not merely the fragrance that imparts their effects. Essential oils are extracted (most often through steam distillation) from the flowers, leaves, stems, roots, seeds and bark of many different plants around the world. These oils function as the plant’s life source or immune system, fighting off bacteria, viruses, yeasts, molds, and insects. The French chemist Renee Gattefosse wrote the first book on Aromatherapy and did all of his initial testing of the essential oils on dogs and horses. Since then, there has been much scientific testing done on the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of essential oils, as well as their calming effects on the body. In European countries, Aromatherapy is a common part of everyday life and is used to treat all types of conditions. It is even covered by medical insurance in France. Ask a European about Aromatherapy and “bubble bath” will not be part of the answer. Aromatherapy has been around and has been practiced in one form or another since the beginning of civilization. It is the art and science of using oils extracted from aromatic plants to enhance health.

Apart from the physical benefits, essential oils can have subtle effects on the mind and emotions. Essential oils taken from plants are described as being their “life force” they are essential to the plants’ biological process, as well as being the substance that gives them their scent. These substances contain [natural] hormones, antibiotics, vitamins, and antiseptics. Essential oils are far more alive and potent than dried herbs.” Synthetic oils, even if chemically similar will lack the natural elements and that vital life force that make essential oils so valuable therapeutically.

Use only pure unadulterated “Genuine & Authentic” or “Grade A” oils. Most people think the words PURE or 100% PURE on the label of an essential oil mean it’s a good oil. That is far from true.

Hundreds of essential oils are available for use. One that most of you are probably familiar with and one I will never be without is Lavender. It is steam distilled from the flowers of Lavandula officinalis. In addition to being extremely useful medicinally, Lavender has a delicate and beautiful fragrance. It is calming, anti-depressive, anti-inflammatory, and helpful for treating burns. It is extremely useful as a fungicide and germicide. It can be applied directly to the animal’s skin, incorporated into sprays and shampoos, and is wonderful diluted in distilled water and/or alcohol for use as a room freshener. To calm down nervous or hyperactive dogs, place a few drops on the dog’s bed, crate pad or sleeping area. Also, rub a little on the foot pads. (For car sickness treatment, see peppermint).

Another widely used essential oil is Eucalyptus. It is steam distilled from the leaves of the Eucalyptus tree. There are several hundred varieties of Eucalyptus. I prefer to use Eucalyptus globulus for most purposes. Eucalyptus is bactericidal, antifungal, and an extremely useful inhalant for respiratory complaints. Used in a diffusor (a special machine that vaporizes essential oils), it helps to inhibit the spread of contagious disease and discourages insects. Eucalyptus works exceptionally well combined with Citronella Oil, Cedarwood Oil, & Peppermint Oil to keep insects away.

Peppermint is another oil that I always keep on hand. It is steam distilled from the leaves and flower tops of the Mentha piperita plant. It is extremely useful to prevent motion sickness and nausea, a very good pain reliever and also effective in discouraging pests (such as mice) and insects. It’s smell is wonderfully cool and refreshing. To prevent car sickness, place a few drops of Peppermint and Lavender on your dogs crate pad or car seat. For your use, Peppermint and Lavender are extremely effective to relieve headaches. Place a small amount on your wrists, temples (dont get into eyes), and under your tongue. For those who have trouble sleeping, Peppermint should only be used during the day. It can keep you awake if used at night.

Citronella and Lemongrass mixture with your choice of base oil “carrier oil” or spring water makes a great insect repellent.

Lemongrasscan be used on ringworm and other fugus. Research was published in The Journal of Phytotherapy Research on topically applied lemongrass for its powerful antifungal properties.

Rose (Rosa damascena), Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata), Clary Sage (Salvia sclare) should help taming tension for your over active dog about to take a trip to the vet or groomer or yourself during a stressful event! (also see Peace & Calming blend below)

Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita) will help itchy skin, dry or sluggish skin and coat and helps fight against skin parasites as well.

Lavender and Marjoram can help tight, cramping, sore muscles, etc. Add a few drops on your palm and rub gently. Excellent for working dogs and people too!

A combination of Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), and Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) with light base oil will help eczema, bruises, and cracked or chapped skin. You can use it on minor cuts as well. Niaouli Essential Oil (Melaleuca viridiflora) can be included to treat viral infections as well. Please be cautions using certain essential oils on pregnant or seizure prone dogs, check with a certified aromatherapist or your Holistic veterinarian. Using herbs, essential oils, hydrosols and all other natural therapies need to be respected and used with care as you would all medication. If in doubt always use your best judgment and always ask your trusted Aromatherapist or holistic vet.

There are many more essential oils and certainly even more combinations one can use, but as you try a few yourselves you can learn to experiment and come up with wonderful concoctions of your own. I normally recommend you use only one or two drops on your pet (or dilute in a little bit of carrier oil). An application that is adequate for an adult human is sometimes overwhelming for a dog’s olfactory system. Dogs have 200 million scent receptors in their nasal folds, we have 50 million. For application to your dog of “hoter” oils, do not dilute, use base oils such as olive, safflower, jojoba, almond or other vegetable oil. A good dilution is: 5 drop of your choice of essential oil 10 ml of carrier oil (olive, jojoba, almond etc.) Mix well and apply. Keep away from the eyes as much as possible, If you get an oil in your pets eye, do NOT rinse with water, use vegetable oil. When applying to dogs, apply on their paws and/or ear tips where the absorption is very fast, You can also sprinkle a few drops on the spine and then massage into skin, just like with humans or just allow the dog to sniff the open bottle of oil will give some benefits. You may want to experiment with some of the following oils and oil blends/combinations: Ear mites in dogs – Purification and Peppermint. Ticks, fleas and flies – Lemongrass, is extremely effective at repelling all kinds of insects. Grapefruit repels insects especially fleas and Ticks. Lemon is a great flea repellant and it smells clean and refreshing. Peppermint is wonderful at repelling flies, fleas, mosquitos, and ants. Cedar, PennyRoyal, Tansy and Tansy floral water also work well. Tumors – Frankincense and Lavender mixed together, Frankincense and Clove mixed together, Helichrysum. Worms / parasites (all animals) – Para Free, and Di-Guise. Open wound – Melrose, Helichrysum and Gentle Care Rose Ointinent.

Anexity – Peace & Calming, Melissa, Lavender, Trauma Life.

*NOTE – The blend called Peace & Calming is being used with wonderful results on many dogs at shows, hunting/trial events, Vet visits, fear of thunder, etc. Here are just a few testimonies on it’s use

Trauma – Trauma Life, Valor, Peace & Calming, Melissa, Rosewood, Lavender, Valerian, and Chamomile. Healing of wounds and abrasions – Gentle Care Rose Ointment.” Essential oils, is an excellent way to calm dogs who are fearful, agitated and hyperactive. The very nature of these substances is such that they work quickly and do not leave the animal in a drugged or listless state, as common tranquilizers such as Valium do. Unlike herbal calming tablets, which take time to digest, aromatherapy essential oils can be inhaled and quickly begin their work. Or applied to the skin will be absorbed into the blood stream and flow where they need to go. Essential oils work on both the physical and emotional level they release these blocks and allow healing.

I have recieved countless testimonies about the use of Oils in treating dogs with various problems. click here to read a few.

Cats can be sensitive to the powerful nature of aromatherapy. Some aromatherapists say “Essential oils must not be used on cats. I have found that if the oils are certified pure, unadulterated, theraputic oils such as Young Living that cats can and do tolerate certian oils being difused as well as applied in small amounts to thier fur (not skin). Please, be very careful with oils and cats! I recommend ONLY Young Living brand essential oils.

“Watch any plant or animal and let it teach you acceptance of what is, surrender to the Now. Let it teach you Being.Let it teach you integrity–which means to be one, to be yourself, to be real. Let it teach you how to live and how to die, and how not to make living and dying into a problem.”
